Turning Back the Clock…
As we know, it was Israel’s Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz who, not long ago, publicly threatened “to turn back the clock in Lebanon by 20 years.” Recently, it seems as if Stephen Harper is not only supporting the Israeli assault, but now he’s parroting their reactionary rhetoric, too.
Harper, speaking on Thursday to a select crowd of party partisans, said, “Given the choice of moving forward with our government, or turning back the clock with the Liberals, Canadians will choose to move forward.”
But, the shame and ugliness of Harper’s biased stance aside, Canadians are smart enough to recognize a false dilemma, and false leadership, when we see it.
While Harper’s obvious admiration for the American system of government leads him to think of Canada as a two-party state (is he buying Karl Rove’s old term papers off the internet?), this simply is not how real Canadian democracy should work.
“Given the choice…”, Canadians no doubt would wish to “turn back the clock”, and get the old Joe Clark Conservatives back, rather than be forced to put up with much more of Harper’s self-serving Conservative/Reform/Alliance Party (CRAP).
