Where’s Edmonton?

I was mentioning the Mercer 2010 Quality of Living Survey in conversation the other day; specifically, the surprise that the Top 5 cities in the Americas on the list are all Canadian, and the comparative lack of surprise that Edmonton is not among them. Worse still, Edmonton doesn’t even rank at all in Mercer’s list of the top fifty cities in the world in which to live.

And yet, here we are.

Yes, but was Edmonton even considered in this global survey of a couple of hundred cities, or were the only Canadian cities in the entire survey Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal & Calgary?

The simple answer to why Edmonton doesn’t rank on the list is that Edmonton isn’t one of the cities that Mercer looks at…. so, what does that say?

There was only one other Canadian city in the running. Regina was also in the survey, but didn’t rank. My guess is that, since the list is technically intended for expatriates, Mercer figures there are more international job transfers to/openings in the cities they do survey. Either that, or somebody isn’t doing a very good lobbying job on behalf of the city. Calgary is their number #1 ranked “eco-city”, for chrissakes…
