Kohler Arts Center Residency

The Arts/Industry residency program is open to all emerging and established visual artists working in any discipline. Applying artists need not be trained ceramists or metal sculptors. However, they must have the capability of quickly mastering the industrial technologies. Artists may choose to work in either the Pottery or the Foundry/Enamel Shop or both. Not everyone who selects both areas may have the opportunity to work in both areas because of space and personnel limitations.

Arts/Industry is often cited as the most unusual ongoing collaboration between the arts and industry in the United States. Hundreds of emerging and established visual artists have benefited from the Arts/Industry program at Kohler Co. since its inception in 1974.   Participants are exposed to a body of technical knowledge that enables them to explore forms and concepts not possible in their own studios as well as new ways of thinking and working.

Artists-in-residence may work in the Kohler Co. Pottery, Iron and Brass Foundries, and Enamel Shop to develop a wide variety of work in clay, enameled cast iron, and brass including but not limited to murals and reliefs, temporary or permanent site-specific installations, and functional and sculptural forms.

Although certainly not mandatory, artists interested in a residency are encouraged to tour Kohler Co. in order to aid them in understanding the possibilities and parameters of the program and in preparing an application.

Edmonton Public Art Bonanza!!!

The EAC has just put out a veritable bounty of public art commission calls for qualifications and proposals, including:
  • A Request-For-Qualifications for a $504,000 3-D exterior commission for three possible locations at the North Central Community Recreation Centre (NCCRC), “which can be discreet or integrated to the building and site locations“. The NCCRC will incorporate a field house for the existing Joe Clarke Athletic Grounds, and implement a revitalized community recreation centre at the south end of Commonwealth Stadium. The first stage will short-list applicants based on qualifications.
  • An RFQ for a $400,000 2- or 3-D interior or exterior commission for four possible locations at the Southwest Community Recreation Centre (SCRC), “which can be discreet or integrated to the building and site locations“. The SCRC is situated at 2051 Leger Road in southwest Edmonton. It will be a key facility as part of an increase in development and amenities in this suburban area, including a new transit centre. (The two 3-D locations have a size restriction of just over 55 feet high, so M. Eiffel may wish to skip this one.)

My first thoughts on seeing the prices offered bounced from thinking how many $10,000 artworks the city could buy from local artists with that money–Imagine the shopping spree the EAC art jurors could have gone on, visiting artists studios and seeing real artworks in the flesh! Imagine what that would do for the artists in the city! A sale for a measly ten grand is enough to change an artist’s life! And the EAC could have done that with 100 local artists! Or, they can give it all to, I dunno, Gene Dub, or whichever architect wins these things. Sorry studio artists, hope you make your rent next month–then my thoughts bounced over to thinking, Man, for half-a-MILLION, you could maybe buy that David Smith the EAG board balked at all those years ago. Or, maybe somebody could broker a deal with Caro and buy those Millbank Steps of his (I know it’s a considerable discount, but he was gonna donate it to Britain… maybe he’d consider selling it to Edmonton at a cut rate, if we weren’t too ungrateful about it. But I digress).

Also included in the EPA banquet, are these comparable crumbs:
  • A Request-For-Proposals for a $66,100 interior commission, which can be discreet or integrated to the building and site locations, “that includes a community collaboration component in the development or production of the artwork”. Locations include possiblities of a 2-D or suspended 3-D public artwork.
  • An RFP for a $50,560 commission for one artist to provide two 2-D public artworks, one for each transit centre: Lewis Estates Transit Centre and Meadows Transit Centre.
  • An RFP for a $41,000 2-D commission for the NCCRC.
  • An RFP for a $23,700 2- or 4-D commission for an artist or designer for either an interior wall, an exterior wall, or “an integrated artist-designed experiential artwork to engage with the trail system” at the Whitemud Park Trailhead Building.

Notably, whereas the RFQs merely ask for your expressions of interest and a little background info, and state you will be paid for your proposals if you reach stage two, the lower-budgeted RFPs boldly require artists to hand over their creative work for free.

Brainless Needless to say, in each case “The artwork proposal should reflect relevance to contemporary art practices“.

Good luck to all my fellow applicants.

Sculptors’ Payday Loan

Red Deer College and The City of Red Deer are inviting submissions of interest for a unique upcoming public art loan project.

The project will place the work of two prominent Alberta sculptors in two significant sites within the Red Deer Waskasoo Park system…

Installation of a large-scale sculpture of either new or pre-existing work will be placed on pre-constructed concrete pads measuring 12′ x 20′ for a period of five years. This public art project will cover the transportation costs of each sculpture to and from Red Deer as well as an exhibition fee of $3000 for a five year exhibition period for each sculpture and a $500 lecture fee for each of the chosen artists to deliver a community presentation of their work.

Opportunities Abroad

“You might be surprised at the number of Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts residents who were accepted into our program on their second, third or even fourth round of juries. We can’t begin to count the number of times that our hearts wanted to say “yes” but limited studio slots prevented us from doing so.

When over 600 artists apply for Bemis Center residencies each year and only a handful are accepted, we fully understand that scores of fantastically creative people are left behind.

Here’s your chance to change all of that!

Our next application deadline is September 30th and we’d love to hear from you again. And remember, jury pools change with each round of reviews.

We highly encourage you to reapply with the attached application because this might be your year! Thanks for considering the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and best of luck in wherever your dreams take you.”

Call for Public Art Jurors

The Edmonton Arts Council (EAC), on behalf of the City of Edmonton, is requesting nominations for our Public Art Jury roster. All artists commissioned through the EAC Public Art Program initially undergo assessment by a Public Art Jury. Juries may be comprised of artists and other community arts/design professionals with knowledge pertinent to the project criteria. Jury members should be capable of providing a critical analysis of the artist’s qualifications, as well as of the suitability of the proposal under review.
